Creating a secure online banking account
Tuesday October 14, 2008
Banks will do what they can to make your online banking secure, but you will need to do your part, too. Many people have online banking passwords that are ridiculously easy to guess. While you may try to think of a password that you will easily remember, be sure that this is not because it would be easy to guess for anyone who knows a little about you. Passwords based on your birthday, where you live, your mother's maiden name, any part of your name or to do with a religious figure are quite common.
If your online banking password allows it, try to use mixed case and numbers for your password. Also try to use the entirety of the characters you may use for your online banking password. Safe Internet banking relies on you doing everything you can, and the longer your password is, the harder it is to guess and the harder it is to randomly generate.
If your online banking account also has security questions, the answers to these should not be obvious. If you ask what your favourite movie or other thing is, make sure this is not publicly listed online or anywhere else. It is vitally important that security questions cannot be easily answered by anyone except for yourself.
