Keep your online banking safe

17 June 2008

Online banking is not as risky as some people will tell you, but it does take a little knowledge and action to ensure your online banking security. Safe Internet banking will usually start with a familiarity with the online banking facilities of your bank. This should help you to avoid phishing scams, where a site poses as a legitimate site in order to steal your information. Always be sure that the address in your address bar is the correct one, and be suspicious of any inconsistencies in the site.

You can also minimise your online banking risk by making sure your computer is free of malicious software. Key loggers and other Trojan horses can infect your system and send your private information to another party. Frequent virus scans with a reliable anti-virus product and the use of a secure firewall can greatly minimise your online banking threat exposure.
