Protect yourself when doing your online banking

22 July 2008

It's important you try to protect yourself against fraud when doing your online banking. While your bank takes many precautions to protect your bank account details, you must also be responsible for yourself.

  • Never respond to emails claiming to be from you bank and never follow any links in the email. Banks do not send out emails to their customers. This is most likely a phishing scam.
  • Protect your online banking passwords. Make them hard to guess, using a mixture of letters and numbers. Change them on a regular basis.
  • Make sure the website is secure. Look for the padlock in the right hand corner.
  • Protect your computer. Install reputable virus checkers, spyware detectors and firewalls and use them on a regular basis.
