Teaching teenagers about online banking
Thursday September 11, 2008
While teenagers may be more used to using technology than the older crowd, online banking can be confronting for them. It often does not have the user friendly interface of other online tools they are used to and unless they have been taught about finances it can be difficult for them to know how their actions can affect the interest they earn on savings.
Teaching them about safe Internet banking is important, though, as many will not be aware of the dangers of phishing scams or what they should do to ensure their system is safe before they engage in online banking. Familiarity breeds contempt, and many seemingly tech-savvy teenagers do not pay attention to the possible dangers that exist online.
It is also important that you help your teenagers to choose the right online banking savings accounts, as getting started with online banking is as much about learning to choose the most advantageous products as it is about learning to use the tools. You may wish to show them how to use comparison tables and what the features of savings accounts mean for their finances.
